AN INTRODUCTION TO
THE DESIGN AND
BUILDING PROCESS
This lecture class
is intended to provide students with a
complete underpinning
for the theory and
practice of architecture.
INSTRUCTOR: Hajo Neis
GSI: tbn
THURSDAY 2:00 - 5:00
3 UNITS
SECTION TIMES TO BE DETERMINED, WILL BE GIVEN BY
GSI'S.
Lectures
to determine the foundation of all architecture, both on a theoretical and on a
practical level. The objective of the lectures is to define the basic structure
needed by any environment which supports life; and to give students an
understanding of the processes required to create that structure. This includes
special emphasis on the beauty of the buildings and the deeper structures which
exist in buildings where great beauty
can be attained.
The
intent of this course is to lay the foundation of a way of looking at
architecture which brings practical function and inner spirit together in one
conception that finds its origin in the physical nature of matter.
Later
classes in the Building Process Area of Emphasis will allow students to develop
the practical insights of this class and to see how they can undertake the
design of buildings, neighborhoods, construction details, and space in a way
that is directly influenced by these conceptions.
Students who take these lectures
will, in individual sections, work through practical problems in design and
construction to illustrate the content of the lectures.
There will also be a special lecture
by Professor Christopher Alexander.
The course of lectures is open to all undergraduates and graduates
without pre-requisite. For undergraduates and option 3 graduate students the
class satisfies the graduation requirement for one of three technical classes that are requiredamong by the Department.
We will also have a few guest lectures from time to
time.
