FINAL REVIEW:
A PIECE OF FURNITURE
• The
final project for the class is a major project, a piece of furniture. The piece should be something that is both
useful and beautiful, a gift to yourself or to a loved one. In this class you first learn to design and
build something for yourself, and later you learn to design and build for
someone else.
• The
piece of furniture should attempt to express the qualities of wholeness and
deep feeling about which we have been speaking in this class. Remember our class exercises in which we
compare two objects or places and ask "which one has more life?" Your project should express this same sense
of life, which will be one of the criteria we use in grading the projects.
• In
practical terms, you should consider the field of centers and the fifteen
geometric properties and properties of color.
In terms of process you should think about structure preserving
transformations, the process of formation of a field of centers, the
fundamental process, and the art of making.
• In the
final review, you will be asked to present at least one successful structure
preserving transformation in your design and building process.
• You
should also turn in the journal you have been asked to keep to document your
process. Your journal should describe
your initial vision of the piece, your analysis of the geometric properties of
your piece, and the major transformations which created more life in the piece
as it evolved.
• The
final review will take place in Wurster Hall from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on
Thursday, December 2, 1999. We will
begin with a brief introduction of the final project. There will be three sections presenting simultaneously. Each group of three students will have a
total of twenty minutes for presentation and response. Each student will be given a maximum of two
minutes to present his/her project.
Remember, the piece should "speak for itself."
• After
the review furniture will be stored on the ninth floor for final grading. Furniture can be picked up after Wednesday
December 8th from the ninth floor.
Please meet with GSIs after the review to discuss project pickup and
late projects.
• We would
like to thank you the students very much for a wonderful semester. Thanks also to our reviewers, and to Denise
Rush and the staff at the woodshop for all their help and advice. Have a pleasant holiday and a Happy New
Millenium!
